Banana Republic

The fact that half the voters think Bush is worthy of re-election given the damage he has done to the country, the fact that the news media have cowered to the pressure of the right in spite of the facts being against the right's rhetoric, the fact that our government has international support from governments that are: run undemocratically (numerous, including many of the former Soviet states especially Russia); unfairly informed by slanted press (most notably Italy); or, support policies against the will of the people (80% in Britain oppose the war in Iraq and a majority oppose the close alliance with the US), and the fact that the Bush campaign has run a lying rant of a candidacy built on fear, leads me to a simple conclusion.

America is now a banana republic. If Kerry wins, it will take a long time to change this perception for me and it will take a long time to undo the damage of four years of Bush. If Bush wins, the country is more fucked than it already is. The US used to be the best country on the planet, I can no longer support this argument. It is a country that pursues wealth at all costs, coddles criminals in the halls of executive power, screws over the ordinary person, and puts religion ahead of all else.

For me, of course, that last part is the worst aspect of all. As long as god is part of our political process, our country will always be backwards no matter the strength of our military or the size of our economy (I'll refrain from saying the strength of our economy since it is built on debt).

Why should I be surprised, though? I grew up in a religious family and went to pentecostal churches for a time so I know how these people avoid rational, logical thought at all cost.

Again, I should not be surprised given the number of Iran-Contra criminals now taking part in the current administration, and the number of those who touted the great threat of the Soviet Union so many years ago even though it was well known in intelligence circles that the Soviet empire was alread crumbling. These people always thought military strength was the be-all, end-all of economic and political clout on the planet. This is the same arrogant, imperial bullshit that has brought down countless numbers of powers in the past and I don't see it any other way for the US unless god is brought down and people are actually educated as to the truths of history, our own and that of the rest of the world.

And, as long as the current incarnation of the GOP is in power it won't happen. They'll continue to claim that god was an integral part of our nation's founding, that god is an inherent part of our Constitution, and they will continue to ensure that the rich get richer and that the bulk of America is uninformed on the truth.
