We Are So Fucked

David Sirota nails it.

The Hard Way: enforce international trade agreements or don't trade with countries that can't make it work. Make countries respect the rights of workers, give workers living wages, offer retirement benefits and health care. Enforce environmental and safety standards so people aren't dying, or being crippled, from preventable, hazardous conditions.

The Easy Way: ensure that your own country has enough poor people, and few enough regulations, that your economy can compete with those that employ slave labor and force people to live on less than 1000 calories a day, with those whose water supplies are poisonous and air is suffocating.

How About This?

Don't say those two words. Yes, they are unconstitional but, while we are in the process of trying to nail the far right's coffin shut in the midst of the nation's awakening to the fact that they obviously can't govern, save it for the days when the adults are back in charge and all we have to worry about is some tumult over a blue dress.

That was my answer 20+ years ago. It wasn't too comfortable in a place like Virginia Beach but at least the place wasn't as looney as it is now. There is no legal compunction to say those two words. So, don't say them. The rest of it is okay even if forced patriotism gives you the willies.

Stephen Fry lays out a beauty and, being Fry, it obviously compels me to quote from the greatest British comedy ever.

"Sorry about the pong you fellows, trod in a Boche and can’t get rid of the whiff."

And this, in turn, leads me to watch the episode on the DVD collection that ConnMan gave to me a few years back. Watching it comes the following hilariously (sadly?) apt quote from the same episode.

"Yes, that’s the spirit, George. If nothing else works, then a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through."

Suck On This

Publius, last week, nails one truly well to the wall. The GOP endorsed the bullshit about which they are now so loudly complaining. Any time one party has as close to absolute rule as the GOP currently does, that party gets to set the rules of the game. The non-GOP majority, which is also unfortunately a voting minority, is simply playing by the current rules.

Suck on that, you ninnies!

P.S. - I should add that my inspiration for referring to this was the premise that penguins are now GOP posterchildren.
